The People together with UNFPA, UNICEF,
Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs, Ministry of Water Resources
and Sanitation, Ministry of Health and
other partners celebrate the 10th anniversary of Menstrual Hygiene Day on the
theme ; together for a #PeriodFriendlySLE#.
A one day symposium was held on the 28th May 2024 at the New Brookfields
Hotel in Freetown. There were colourful
exhibitions from various organisations, businesses, and government ministeries
exhibiting their work, followed by statements from different government
ministers. There were also panel group discussions and interactive sessions all
focused on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM). The aim of the symposium was to
raise awareness on MHH and define clear objectives on the gaps in Sierra Leone and what needs to be
done. Recommendations were made, and goals were set moving forward. Overall, it was an educative and interesting
event as we hope to celebrate next year with amazing achievements. Aid The
People believes that a "PeriodFriendlySLE" will be a Sierra Leone
were; 1. Every girl/woman will be able to access and afford menstrual products.
2 . All toilets in schools, higher learning institutions, government offices, private institutions, public places will be gender segregated with
clean running water and soap for handwashing, and covered dust bins. 3.
Menstruation should be talked-about openly and freely without any bias or
stigma attached all over the country.
